- Recognizes the alpha subunit of the CD11b/CD18 complex, an alpha/Beta heterodimeric surface glycoprotein on human leukocytes (Mr 165-170 KDa). The CD11b/CD18 antigen belongs to the beta2 integrin family. Other names include Mac-1, Cr3, MO-1 and C3bi receptor. The CD11b molecule functions as a receptor for C3bi complement, clotting factor X, fibrinogen and ICAM-1. The CD11b antigen is expressed on approximately 30% of human peripheral blood lymphocytes, most natural killer lymphocytes, circulating monocytes, granulocytes, a subset of T-cells and subsets of macrophages.

- This gene encodes the integrin alpha M chain. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. This I-domain containing alpha integrin combines with the beta 2 chain (ITGB2) to form a leukocyte-specific integrin referred to as macrophage receptor 1 ('Mac-1'), or inactivated-C3b (iC3b) receptor 3 ('CR3'). The alpha M beta 2 integrin is important in the adherence of neutrophils and monocytes to stimulated endothelium, and also in the phagocytosis of complement coated particles.
